Yeshivas Elimelech is named for two people named “Elimelech”—each of whom had a profound influence upon the world and the founders of our yeshiva.

Painting of Rev Elimelech commissioned for Yeshivas Elimelech by the Burt, Lieberman, and Roth families.

Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk (1717–1787) was one of the great founding rabbis of Chasidus, and is considered to be the founder of Polish Chassidus. He is the author of the classic work, the Noam Elimelech, which has extraordinary insights into the inner secrets of the Torah that are highly relevant for today’s world. Our Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Shmuel Herzfeld, is a direct descendant of Reb Elimelech.

Reb Emil (Meilech) Landau was born in 1902 in Jadachy, Galicia, where he was educated in the Tarnov Yeshiva. He came to America in 1941, escaping from the Holocaust via Belgium. Reb Meilech raised a beautiful family dedicated to the values of Torah and Jewish education. He generously supported many great Torah institutions. He was Chairman of the Board of the Bobover Yeshiva and also of the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach. He kept a special account of the 250 Torah institutions that he supported and he instructed his heirs to work hard to support the spread of Torah. His grandson, Joey Low, is a founding Board member of our yeshiva.
